Have you ever had a layover of eight hours or more? It can be a weird amount of time. It’s not quite enough time to truly do some sightseeing, but it is way too much time to spend sitting at an airport.

For most people, layovers can feel the same as being stuck in purgatory. . However, there are many activities you can do during layovers to help pass the time. Why not leave the airport or at least play a game? Here are some ideas to help you kill your boredom. Keep reading to learn about five ideas to help you not lose your mind during a layover.

1. Read a Book

During a layover, it can be fun and enlightening to read a book about the country you’re going to visit. You’ll certainly learn a lot about its history and culture while also passing the time engrossed in a good book, whether it’s a novel, a short story collection, or a memoir from an important historical figure.

While flying to China, I read an amazing autobiography by Fang Lizhi titled The Most Wanted Man in China: My Journey from Scientist to Enemy of the State. It really opened my eyes to the country’s history.

2. Listen to Music

If you load your phone with your favorite music then you basically have a portable party in your pocket. There’s nothing like killing time by jamming. You’ll want to also bring an awesome pair of headphones, such as Beats by Dre or anything by Bose.

In preparation for your travels, you could even create one or more playlists that you’ll know will be perfect for boosting your mood and just having an overall good time.

3. Get Some Exercise

Some airports actually have gyms available where you can get on a treadmill or a rowing machine.

If you’re at an airport that isn’t so luxurious then you can simply walk around the airport and still burn a lot of calories while feeling good. To get your blood pumping you can listen to the music you’ve brought with you.

4. Challenge Yourself with an Escape Room

If you’ve ever asked, “Can you leave the airport during a layover?” the answer is yes, as long as you have enough time.

Some layovers can be so long that you might feel trapped, but it doesn’t have to be that way. The next time you have to wait hours and hours for your next flight you should escape the airport and then try an escape room.

5. Catch Up on Zs

Traveling can be tough and it can be exhausting. If you’re like most people, you probably didn’t end up getting restful sleep on your flight.

You could try to find a comfortable way to sleep in the airport, like leaning over your luggage or you could leave the airport and go to a nearby hotel to really treat yourself to some proper rest.
