10 Things You Need To Do In Prague

Prague is one of my favorite cities that I have ever been to. There are so many reasons why so I’ll try to sum it up as best as I can in this article. Anyone who has ever been to Prague can probably vouch for this when I say that it is one of the most energetic, vibrant, and lively cities that you will ever go to. It is pretty tough to describe, so you should definitely try to experience it for yourself.

10 Things To Do In Prague

1. Visit Prague Castle

The architecture in Prague is incredible and nowhere is this in better display than Prague Castle. The cathedral is one of the most iconic buildings in all of Central and Eastern Europe. It is also the largest ancient castle in the world. Even if you’re not into looking at architecture and history, you’re going to want to visit here. The whole area is filled with intricately detailed buildings, colorful facades, and killer views over the rest of the city.

2. Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí)

You’ll be pretty familiar with this place no matter how much time you spend in Prague. Whether you spend three months or three days in Prague, you’ll definitely stumble into the Old Town’s main plaza a fair few times. This place is one of the liveliest areas in the whole city. Yeah, it’s super touristy and I would rather eat out of a trash can than eat at one of the restaurants here but it is definitely still worth the stop. You have the astronomical clock and a bunch of cool looking towers. Prague isn’t known as the city of a thousand spires for nothing. The view from the astronomical clock is also one of my favorites of the city.

3. Klementinum

I stumbled upon an article claiming this was one of the most beautiful libraries in the world and it truly is. Unfortunately, you are not allowed to go inside the library. Probably for the better, you are only allowed to look at it. It is breathtaking, but there is much more to this amazing building than just the library. Take a tour for 140 crowns ($6-7) and you will get a view of Prague unlike any other. You’ll get to visit a chapel where Mozart performed in as well as dozens of rooms and astronomical lookouts where the world’s greatest scientists have made historical breakthroughs.

4. Watch the Sunrise from the Charles Bridge (Karluv Most)

Charles Bridge is great. 10/10 would cross again. Buuuuut it’s also extremely touristy and you’ll hardly make it ten feet without bumping into another tourist or a street vendor or sometimes a creepy busker dressed as a clown. This is why I suggest watching the sunrise from here. Almost no one will be there. You will get the absolute most incredible view of the city draped softly in light from the rising sun.

5. Climb the Petrin Tower for a Great View of the City

Half the fun is getting up there. You can take a funicular up the hill or go on an adventurous hike. Regardless of your decision, the views will be worth it. You will get a chance to see the entire city. Trust me, the view from the tower is a whole lot prettier than the view of the tower.

6. Go to the National Theatre

This building is awesome. I, unfortunately, did not get a chance to watch a show or opera here, but it is still a beautiful building inside and out. There’s a neat little cafe in here, too, and it was a great place to relax in between walking like twenty miles around the city. It’s a great area that most tourists fail to wander to, because it is nearby a bridge that isn’t called Charles Bridge. I recommend getting lost in this area and falling in love with the lesser-known (to tourists) parts of Prague.

7. Drink beer… a lot of beer.

Beer is cheaper than water here. Do I need say more? It is not bad beer either. Go ahead. Drink a couple at lunch, a couple at dinner, maybe one as a midday snack. You’re going to burn off all the calories walking anyway.

8. While we’re on the topic of beer, the beer gardens are a must

The only thing better than a beer is a beer with a view. This is seriously one of the best places to just kick back and take it all in. Just sit back, appreciate life, and be happy. If I had unlimited time to spend in Prague, I would go to the beer garden in Vysehrad (Hospudka na Hradbach) every day.

9. Chill by the Vltava River around sunset

This is where a lot of the locals go to hang out with their friends and pregame a night full of festivities. The sunset is beautiful. Just hang out with your friends, drink some beer, and enjoy life. Prague is a great city with a lot to do, but sometimes you just need to rest your tired legs and chill. Also I apparently got too drunk and tried to jump in the river, and uhh don’t do that.

10. Go Paddleboating in the Vltava River by the Charles Bridge

On a day with nice weather, nothing will feel better than just being on the water. Grab your friends, rent some paddleboats, and enjoy the views of the city from right on the water. I don’t normally advocate for tourist traps like this but it does give you a unique perspective of the city. Plus, the city is a lot less crowded on the river than it is on land.

(P.S. for those who like to smoke, weed is not legal in Prague, but who is going to catch you on a paddleboat? The paddleboat police? You didn’t hear it from me.)

Do not limit yourself to just these suggestions. Get lost, and just follow wherever seems interesting! Prague is such an incredibly diverse and unique city that I could live here for years and still find surprises in every alley or wrong turn. Also, make sure to PARTY in Prague! 1. I’ve been to Prague a few years ago, but now I see, I only did half of the fun things what are on your list. Next time I don’t want to miss paddleboating on the river 😀

  2. I went to Prague in the winter and everything looks so different! We were deep in snow in the city and I thought Charles Bridge looked amazing. People wre taking their snowboards and sleds up Petrin Hill and boarding all the way down. Then back up the funicular to do it again!

    1. That sounds awesome! I’ve never been to Prague in the winter but I can imagine it is even more of a fairy tale. Love when winter brings out the best in a city
